What is Clinical Pilates?
Evolving over 100s of years, Clinical Pilates is a modern evolution of Pilates, originally developed to assist dancers and later, soldiers in World War 1. Fast forward to today where Physiotherapists have taken the old methods and revitalised them for our current day aches and pains using up to date research and clinical trials.
By definition, Clinical Pilates can only be run by a Physiotherapist. And that’s what we do here at Instinct Health.
Clinical Pilates is an individualised strength, balance, coordination and resistance-based training platform, tailored to you by your physiotherapist. We use a range of equipment to complete this including the Pilates Reformer, Trapeze Table, Swiss Ball, Hand Weights, The Magic Circle and much, much more!

What is our process?
To commence Clinical Pilates, we ask that you complete an Initial Assessment with one of our physiotherapists. Your physio will thoroughly assess, and diagnose, any movement patterns that you will need to address as part of your rehab. You will be introduced to the key movement principles that will most benefit you, and commence your at-home program to complement what you do in the studio. From there, you will likely complete a 2-3 further 1:1 sessions with your physio to ensure that you feel safe to enter a small group class.
The classes are kept small. 1 physio and a maximum of 4 clients per class. This ensures you have excellent supervision and can enjoy the positive social aspects of a small group. As you continue on your class journey your physio will progress your exercises to consistently challenge you as you go along. The classes run for 45 minutes so you know you’ll have a good amount of time to complete your session.
The majority of our clients become hooked once they start – and they stay in the class for a long time! Others may utilise the opportunity to recover from a particular injury or life event and will only complete the classes for 3-6 months. Wherever you are on your rehab path, we are here to help. We will do everything we can to accommodate you, your circumstances and your body.

Clinical Pilates Assessment at instinct
All of our clients begin their Pilates journey with a assessment with one of our accredited Pilates trained Physiotherapists. This assessment is a wonderful opportunity to identify areas to focus on to achieve the best results for you. We will begin by discussing your history, expectations and goals. Your physio will discuss your answers with you whilst enquiring further where necessary.
From there your physio will complete a top to toe postural and movement assessment to help formulate a plan in line with your goals. Your physio will create a summary of focus and prepare your program for your next session. You’ll be provided with relevant information about how your body works and how to manage and take care of it between Pilates classes.
