Why seeing a dietitian is worth your time (and money!)

Most people recognise diet as being an integral factor in health, but with all the nutrition information available on social media, in books, magazines or TV programs, it’s becoming hard to distinguish between the garbage and real evidence-based advice. Because of this often conflicting information, there has been a discrediting to the dietetic profession and the credibility of the industry. There are many “experts” providing information, however its validity can be questioned.
How do you become a dietitian?
To be a dietitian you must complete a minimum of 4 years of study at university. The degree, excluding nutrition, also includes chemistry, biology, pharmacology (the study of medical conditions) as well as research projects and clinical placements that give students real-life experience with real-life clients, before they step into the professional workforce. Only then can a dietitian register as an Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD).
After becoming an APD, you must complete 30 hours of professional development each year to uphold this status. This is overseen and regulated by the governing body for dietitians, the Dietitians Association of Australia. In short, to keep your status as an APD you must keep up with the evidence and research surrounding nutrition and only provide clients with evidence-based nutrition advice.
