Often we’re asked, how does your Yoga Camberwell program differ from your Pilates Camberwell program? How will it help me? Hopefully this should answer a few of those questions for you!

Here at Instinct Health in Camberwell, we approach yoga in a slightly different way. We believe that you should move every joint in every direction, and as such, we structure our yoga classes accordingly.

Yoga has been practiced in various forms for thousands of years and modified, changed over that time. There is hot yoga, yin, vinyasa and combinations of each of those. At Instinct, we practice a style of yoga that we feel best compliments the needs of our clients. In this, our classes will incorporate a combination of yin and vinyasa.

Yin Yoga and Vinyasa Flow

Our Yoga Camberwell Road studio offers both yin yoga and vinyasa flow. Yin yoga focuses on extended periods of time holding a particular posture allowing the body to go into a deep, therapeutic stretch.

These stretches can last for anywhere between 30 seconds to a few minutes at a time. During these extended holds, it allows the muscles, and their attaching tendons, sufficient time to reduce in tension and achieve their full range of movement. Associated with these stretches are a guided and structured breathing pattern to allow your mind to connect to your body and focus on where your body is, relative to space.

Vinyasa or vinyasa flow postures are also incorporated into our classes at Instinct Health. This style of yoga has a slightly higher pace and is more dynamic than the yin style. This still requires strength and the timing of your breaths will guide you in the speed of movements throughout the practice. The focus of vinyasa yoga is the movements between postures as opposed to the prolonged hold postures of a yin style.

Our Yoga classes run for 60 minutes and during the practice you will have the opportunity to improve flexibility, practice mindfulness, improve body awareness and postural alignment.

The Practice of Mindfulness

Another key component at our Yoga Camberwell Melbourne studio is the concept and practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the ability to bring the mind and body into the present moment. It is the awareness of the environment around us and the focus on a specific sound or sensation or smell or feeling. While focussing on any of these particular things, being mindful is the ability to allow other thoughts or feelings to pass through our mind, and bring us back to the present task. This is a great way of achieving mental clarity and relaxation. It can also further assist in the connection between the mind and the body. The combination of these key pillars of our yoga practice allow for a physical and mental connection that have been shown to improve sleep, flexibility, resting heart rate and stress levels.
